Good morning Dear Friends
For nearly 6 weeks I have been spending about 80% of my time in bed . Prescribed by the doctors a cocktail of drugs has helped me in managing the pain, however they have also made me very sick. I have lost 7.9 kilos in weight. Four days ago I just stopped taking the morphine and noticed the pain was not there. Yesterday I met my Neurosurgeon in the hospital in the City of Plymouth. She showed me my MRI scans and explained that age and maybe accidents years ago have damaged my back but due to me "resting" in bed the MRI scans now show that it has repaired itself and I can gradually come off all the pills from today. I can walk without my frame, drive my car in fact just get on with my life. I am weak because of the time in bed so I must take it easy but I am without pain, and well, back to normal. I cancelled all my gigs for the rest of this year and have not blown my trumpet for 6 weeks so that's the first job, but there is no pressure.
Earlier this morning I went to the barn and discovered a beautiful Jaguar car, not used for nearly two months covered in dust and bird droppings and I can't wait to get it out and drive it! Later to day we are going to Penance to do a little shopping and I'm excited, it is amazing of how we take small everyday things for granted but how we miss them when you can't just get up and go. Lyn has been the best nurse in the world the whole time.
On Leaving the surgeons office I checked to make sure I knew all the things I should now do or not do and my last question was about red wine. She replied "A glass or two will be good for you!" Yipeeeeeee
Sorry it is a long email but I wanted you to be the first to know. I'm up, I'm walking and looking for the seeing you again.
As always
Derek

That's the best news ever, Derek, and thank you, Kjeld for posting this on your blog! It has been a constant worry for us and every day we have had to resist the temptation to pester Lyn for an update :). We had given him till today - and then we were going to phone or email for news about the visit to Plymouth - just couldn't wait any longer. What a wonderful surprise then, to get a phone call from Derek first thing this morning giving us the wonderful news that he was 'back on his feet'. We know it's going to be a long, hard road to get his lip back - but the practice starts today. The world can breath a sigh of relief!! (Scandinavia in particular!) Happy, happy, day.:)
