Via Cliff "Kid" Bastien, who died Feb. 8, 2003, I am through email and the Internet become really good friend with Bob Jones from Ontario, who was also good friend and admirer of "Kid" Bastien and his music. The picture above is showing Bob Jones to the right and his friend Gord Cude left. "Kid" Bastien's signing his first LP with his Camelia Jazz Band in 1973. The orchestra consisted of such good musicians as Brian Williams on clarinet, Pete Savory on trombone, John Mathieson piano, Bob Boyle banjo and legendary Denis Elder on drums. Their former bassist, Max Leggatt was unfortunately just returned to the UK, but was replaced by Jimmy Jones. Great band and great album. Photo taken at Grossman's a Saturday in August 2002 when Bastien wrote a new greeting on the cover.
When I arrived at Grossmann's Saturday afternoon, to play with "Kid" Bastien last orchestra - The Happy Pals - I was to my surprise received by Bob Jones and his friend Gord Cude. Gord has reached the impressive age of 96 and still fit for fight and a good time with New Orleans music. Fantastic!
Another surprise when Bob Jones asked for the microphone and told about Bastien, his and my friendship. And then another one: Bob Jones insisted giving me the LP cover with all the signatures. Very touching. I have the vinyl already - but now the cover can be replaced with the "original". Thank you Bob for also signing the cover to me. I am proud to be your friend, and good to finally meet you.
